Why I Chose an Online Degree College
If I’ve learned nothing from my brief time sharing the planet with 7 billion people spinning through the wild blue yonder of space, is that with choice comes consequence. Sometimes our choices are good ones and others not so much. Overall, I’ve done reasonably well with making sound choices, but my choice to drop out of high school at 17 wasn’t one of them.
It certainly had profound consequences which affected my life early on and became the driving reason I chose an online degree college to earn my degree from.
Let me be clear, no one grows up setting out in life to become a high school dropout. For me it was a perfect storm of events and lack of guidance in life that pushed me to that choice. Despite this, I’d always assumed traditional college would be the path I’d follow, then a good job, the family, white picket fence, and happily ever after. However, my choice to leave high school altered all of that.
Though I don’t recall the exact day I left my high school for good, I can still remember the intense feelings of uncertainty and generally being lost that ensued. Eventually, time and effort saw me straighten out the hurdles that choice had on my life, but it had squarely prevented me from attending the traditional college of my dreams as a youth.
I needed flexibility and that is what I found with my online degree college. It was the freedom to take courses at the time that was right for me. The ability to study late in the evenings after my newborn son was in bed for the night. In short, the ability to create the college experience as I saw fit. More importantly, it was an experience that I had to look no further than my own driveway to participate in.
My home became my college.
This doesn’t mean there weren’t guidelines or parameters that I had to work within, because there were. I still had to meet academic standards to earn my degree.
There were still the core courses to take, and upper level electives to tackle. Unlike many traditional colleges that now attempt to step a student through earning a degree, much of how I experienced earning my online degree was up to me and my academic advisers.
It was the experience and flexibility I needed at the right time and place.
It reminded me a bit an interview with Steve Jobs I’d listened to who famously dropped out of Reed College, but then became a drop-in sampling classes that were of interest to him before finally embarking on what eventually became the Apple Computer we know today. Online degree college, though structured, felt more interactive than traditional college for me.
I too had become a drop-in of sorts sampling from the smorgasbord of collegiate education offerings to earn my degree. It was that freedom to create the experience I need that was the reason I chose distance education as the delivery mechanism for earning my degree.
It takes a unique person to enter into the world of online degree education with the goal of earning a degree. The choice will have consequences. Late night studying will be the norm. Giving up nights on the town with friends to prep for a test will take priority in order to succeed. Perhaps, you’ll be getting used to a bit of lost sleep now and again. It also means you’ll earn a degree which is yours for life once earned.
An online degree college is not a panacea to everybody’s college needs, but for those who will benefit from it the opportunity is worth taking advantage of.
Are you a person who will benefit from it? Yes! What are you waiting for then?
