What Should I Know About Online Degree Cost?

How much will an online degree cost?  Like many questions about an online degree it all depends.  There are many factors that will ultimately determine the cost of your own online degree once you decide to pursue it.

First, what online degree college do you want to attend?  The costs vary greatly across all online degree schools from as little as $7,000 per year to well in excess of $15,000 or more.  Again it depends on the school.  This is why being very clear about the degree you want to earn is so important.  Once you know what degree you wish to earn, you can then search the various online programs to find those that match your needs.  It’s wise to compare many programs to truly find one that meets your needs as a student and your budget.

Next, you have the consideration of additional costs for your degree as well.  There are books, if not included in the tuition.  Does the program you’re interesting in require any on campus visits?  If so, can you manage the time away from other commitments and the cost of the trip?

As you can see there is more to determining online degree cost than simply considering the program tuition alone.   What works best is sitting down with pencil and paper once you’ve found the degree and school you’d like to attend.  Capture all costs associated with the program which is usually provided in the degree details.  Take a realistic look at your time commitments to identify how many hours of course work you can successfully manage keeping in mind the average course is three hours.  For example, if you believe you could handle two 6 hour college courses a semester and tuition was $300 per credit hour the cost would be $1800 per semester for tuition.  You could then assume $100 per textbook for each course to come up with $2,000 per semester in total.

Determining the online degree cost is one of the more stressful parts of earning an online degree simply because it begs the question “how in the heck will I pay for this?”  There are ways to do this using student loans and grants as well but that is another topic all together.  Rest assured if you commit to earning your degree online you’ll find a way to pay for it.  It may not be easy, trust me I didn’t enjoy paying my tuition twice a year, but I managed.

What you can count on is this – the longer you wait to decide to pursue earning an online degree will only mean your online degree cost will go up a little more each year you wait.  Indecision quite simply will cost you money.  Though it’s the least enjoyable part of earning a degree understanding all the factors that make up online degree cost must be fully understood.  By fully understanding the cost of earning an online degree you’ll also start to understand ways to save money while earning it.
